After visiting God’s Window in the Blyde River Nature Reserve Joan and I stopped at this most amazing geologic wonder, Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
Read about the interesting cultural history at Joan’s site here.
Named after Thomas Bourke who was involved in gold mining in the area.
Where the Blyde River (“river of joy”) and the Treur River (“river of sorrow”) meet, thousands of years of whirling soil-laden water carved surreal cylindrical rock sculptures.
This left behind a series of dark pools which contrast with the streaked white and yellow lichen covered rocks. The pools looked rather inviting for a place to soak but a long ways down with fast moving water.
We wandered around for a bit but had more places to visit that day, like the Three Rondawels.
Oh how beautiful, Gaelyn. It does look inviting and the potholes are so smooth. I look forward to your post about the Three Rondawels. Have a wonderful day. (((Hugs))) Jo
More memories of very happy family holidays. Thanks Gaelyn. Diane

Gaelyn: I would really love to visit that place.
I was wondering when you were going to get to this one… Every time I see those pictures it just amazes me! Some day…
Amazing the power of water over time. Beautiful..I wonder where you want to go next Gaelyn….Michelle
If I had to make a list of 10 places in South Africa that I still want to visit and hasn't been to, this would be on that list.
The things nature does is absolutely amazing at times. What an incredible place.
Your pics came out great Gaelyn, but there is a very strange, weird person in one of them. 🙂
It was such a good day there and these bring back such nice memories of our trip. It is time for me to be heading out for a few weeks again.
Beautiful shots.
Louis would love this bridge on Sunday Bridges on his blog (wwwbayphoto.blogspot.com).
Ain't Ma Nature Grand!! MB
I like the way water sculpts the river channels.
Fascinating place. Water can carve such amazing designs!
What a beautiful and amazing place! I love seeing the patterns that nature creates, decorating at its finest!
Very interesting formations. The water looks beautiful but not for wading in my opinion.
